Here at Children’s Tolls for Africa, we work hard to make it easy for everyone to do just that: Help Children in Africa with sickle cell disease

Children’s Tolls for Africa strives to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals with Sickle cell disease (SCD) in Africa and their families by helping people reach their full potential through education of the disease by providing printed material on:

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells. People with sickle cell disease have red blood cells that contain mostly hemoglobin* S, an abnormal type of hemoglobin. Sometimes these red blood cells become sickle-shaped (crescent shaped) and have difficulty passing through small blood vessels.

Sickle cell crisis is characterized by sudden pain throughout the body especially around joints, dizziness, fatigue, malaise, low oxygen in blood, swelling in the hands, abdominal swelling, pale skin and cerebrovascular accident.

Bone marrow transplant offers the only potential cure for sickle cell anemia. But finding a donor is difficult and the procedure has serious risks associated with it, including death.

Care for sickle cell anemia is usually aimed at avoiding crises, relieving symptoms and preventing complications. If you have sickle cell anemia, you’ll need to make regular visits to your doctor to check your red blood cell count and monitor your health. Treatments may include medications to reduce pain and prevent complications, blood transfusions and supplemental oxygen, as well as a bone marrow transplant.

Mission

Children’s Tolls for Africa works to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families with Sickle cell disease (SCD) by strengthening families, eliminating communication barriers, and helping families in need reach their full potential through learning about SCD and the power of SCD support network group.

Objectives and Goals

Mom speech

Children toll for Africa is a non-profit organization created in the United States of America on 15 January 2015 it main objective is to treat sickle children in Cameroon and around the world. The backbone of the foundation was initiated by Ngameni now 19 was born with sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder that can cause stroke, pain, infections and other symptoms. Approximately 1 in 375 African-Americans in the United States is born with the disease. One in every five children born in Cameroon is diagnosed with sickle cell disease.

It also affects people of Mediterranean descent.

Just 30 years ago, children with sickle cell disease often died at a very young age. Advances in treatment have improved quality of life and expected life span. For a lucky few patients like Ngameni, there is a cure. Her bone marrow transplant took place at O.U Children Hospital in 2010. But because finding a donors is so difficult, this is an option for less than 10 percent of patients. Ngameni has been treated for over 9 years now, and hasn’t been hospitalize for any related sickle cell symptoms. Ngameni journey with sickle cell cure was not easy, she spend one and a half month going through chemotherapy and the bone marrow transplant treatment.

Ngameni is a very bright light. Because of her devoted family and expert healthcare team, and her own formidable strength, she is thriving. Over the past years Ngameni and her family have devoted their time in helping sickle cell children in Cameroon who are not fortunate enough to receive the same treatment she received in the United States. In 2015 Ngameni applied for a 501-C- Non-profit organization which was granted. Armed with this Non Profit, Ngameni has created a Sickle cell charitable foundation called Children Tolls For Africa Corporation. The foundation mission is to create awareness, provide innovative care and pioneering treatment to more children with sickle cell in Cameroon.
